Located just next to the Capitol, this building is truly exquisite and definitely represents the rich and flamboyant era pre-Castro. I went to visit the Theater with my friends in January 2019.
We decided to do the guided tour. Our guide was a young woman very knowledgeable about the history of the theater.
The history began in 1838 as Teatro Tacon. Later the Galician immigrants of Cuba bought the building and adjacent land to make El Centro Gallego. From 1902 to 1961 it was its headquarters. In 1914 they commissioned architect Paul Beleu to re-build it and thanks to him we have beautiful neobaroque façade.
Today, it is the headquarters of the National Ballet and the Havana International Festival. It has capacity for 1500 people in the Garcia Lorca Auditorium. In 2013 they began doing some renovations. In 2015 they named it Gran Teatro Nacional Alicia Alonso.
The architecture is stunning and the theatre is amazing with its gigantic candelabra, grand marble staircase and the statue to the famous Cuban ballerina Alicia Alonso developed in 2016.
If you have a chance to watch a ballet performance there, please do not hesitate, it’s truly magical.

Ten położony tuż obok Kapitolu budynek z piękną elewacją robi niesamowite wrażenie i reprezentuje bogatą oraz ekstrawagancką epokę sprzed Castro. Miałam okazje zwiedzić go wraz z przyjaciółmi w styczniu 2019r. Zdecydowaliśmy się na wycieczkę z przewodnikiem i oprowadzała nas młoda kubanka z bardzo szeroką wiedzą o historii teatru.
Powstał on w 1838 roku pod nazwa Teatro Tacon. Później galicyjscy imigranci kupili budynek i przylegającą ziemię, by stworzyć El Centro Gallego, które miało tam swoja siedzibę w latach od 1902 do 1961. W 1914 zlecono przebudowę budynku architektowi Paul Beleu, który miedzy innymi stworzył słynną neobarokowa fasadę.
Dziś znajduje się tu siedziba Baletu Narodowego i Międzynarodowego Festiwalu Hawańskiego, z głównym audytorium imienia Garcia Lorca, które może pomieścić 1500 osób. W 2013 r. ponownie rozpoczęto prace remontowe a w 2015 roku zmieniono nazwę na Teatr Wielki imienia Alicji Alonso.
Architektura jest oszałamiająca, a teatr zachwyca gigantycznymi świecznikami, wspaniałymi marmurowymi schodami i statuą słynnej kubańskiej baleriny Alicji Alonso wykonanej w 2016 roku.
Jeśli masz szansę obejrzeć występ baletowy, nie wahaj się, to naprawdę magiczne przeżycie.
