Haleakala National Park is located in the eastern part of the island of Maui and the landscape resembles planet Mars
The park is home to three volcanoes - Mauna Loa, Kīlauea, and Haleakala.
The crater of the latter is the world's largest dormant volcano and the largest volcanic crater (12km long,
4. km wide, 600m deep).
Inside it would fit all of Manhattan.
The name Haleakala is derived from the Hawaiian word "house of the sun". The local legend states that Maui's demigod on one of his journeys in the sky, standing on top of the volcano, caught the sun on the lasso, slowing his descent to the last minute.
Haleakala volcano is so big that climbing to its summit, we cover several climates: from a tropical forest to a high desert with temperatures of up to 0 degrees Celsius, with winds often reaching 60 km / h.
To admire some of the most beautiful sunsets and sunrises you have to stay for a night at the volcano or to arrive very early in the morning.
Park Narodowy Haleakala znajduje sie wschodniej części wyspy Maui i krajobrazem przypomina planetę Mars. Na terenie parku położone są 3 wulkany - Mauna Loa i Kīlauea oraz Haleakalā. Krater tego ostatniego jest największym na świecie uśpionym wulkanem oraz największym kraterem wulkanicznym (dł. 12 km, szer. 4.km, głębokość 600 m). W jego wnętrzu zmieściłby się cały Manhattan.
Nazwa Haleakalā pochodzi od hawajskiego słowa "dom Słońca". Lokalna legenda głosi, iż półbóg Maui podczas jednej z jego podróży po niebie, stojąc na szczycie wulkanu, złapał słońce na lasso, spowalniając jego zejście do ostatniej chwili.
Wulkan Haleakala jest tak wielki, że wspinając się na jego szczyt pokonujemy kilka stref klimatycznych: od zwrotnikowego lasu po wysokogórską pustynię z temperaturą do 0 stopni Celsjusza, przy wietrze osiągającym często 60 km/h.
Aby podziwiać jedne z najpiękniejszych zachodów i wschodów słońca trzeba nocować na wulkanie lub przyjechać bardzo wcześnie rano.
